The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel expansion project reached a significant milestone this March as “Mary,” the tunnel-boring machine constructing the new harbor crossings, completed excavation and is now being removed from the site. This marks a major step forward in the region’s $4 billion effort to modernize one of Hampton Roads’ most critical transportation corridors.

With tunnel outfitting now underway and full completion expected in Spring 2027, the project is on track to significantly improve mobility across the region.

Why It Matters to Our Economy

Reliable, efficient transportation infrastructure is essential to economic growth, and the HRBT expansion will deliver meaningful benefits across the Virginia Peninsula and beyond:

Reduced Congestion: Expanding tunnel capacity will ease one of the region’s most persistent traffic bottlenecks, saving time for commuters and improving the daily flow of commerce.

Support for Port Operations: Improved highway access enhances the efficiency of cargo moving to and from the Port of Virginia, strengthening our logistics advantage.

Workforce Mobility: Easier, more predictable travel expands the accessible labor pool for employers and improves quality of life for workers.

Military Readiness: Faster, more reliable routes are critical for the movement of personnel and equipment across one of the nation’s most strategically important defense regions.

The Bigger Picture: Why Roads Matter

Modern economies depend on the safe, efficient movement of people and goods. Wider, safer roads do more than reduce traffic, lower transportation costs, improve reliability, and make regions more attractive for investment.

For Hampton Roads, where geography makes connectivity especially challenging, projects like the HRBT expansion are vital. By improving safety, reducing delays, and increasing capacity, this investment helps ensure that our region remains competitive, connected, and positioned for long-term economic growth.
