One of the Peninsula’s most ambitious economic development initiatives is taking shape around Newport News-Williamsburg Airport (PHF), where local and regional leaders are working to reposition the airport as a center for aerospace innovation, advanced air mobility, logistics, and autonomous systems technology.

At the heart of the effort is the creation of the Air Commerce Park and the Hampton Roads Mobility Innovation Center (MIC), an initiative designed to support the rapidly growing industries surrounding drones, uncrewed systems, aviation testing, and next-generation transportation technologies.

The vision extends far beyond traditional passenger air service. Instead, PHF is being positioned as a hub for research, testing, commercialization, workforce development, and industry collaboration in sectors increasingly tied to both national defense and commercial innovation.

The project has attracted broad regional collaboration involving universities, economic development organizations, aerospace partners, and government agencies. Supporters believe the initiative aligns strongly with national priorities surrounding defense technology, autonomy, and advanced aviation systems.

For the Virginia Peninsula, the project represents an opportunity to capitalize on existing regional assets — including NASA Langley, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Newport News Shipbuilding, and the region’s engineering talent base — while creating a platform for future innovation-driven economic growth.
