More than a decade after the closure of Fort Monroe as an active military installation, redevelopment efforts continue potentially transforming the historic waterfront property into one of the Peninsula’s most unique mixed-use destinations.
Recent momentum has centered around a new $20 million redevelopment initiative that will convert two historic Fort Monroe buildings into residential housing, adding at least 80 new housing units while preserving the site’s historic character.
The redevelopment reflects a broader long-term vision for Fort Monroe that includes housing, tourism, recreation, entrepreneurship, cultural assets, and waterfront placemaking. Leaders continue to view the property as both a historic treasure and an economic catalyst capable of driving investment and quality-of-life improvements across the region.
The challenge has always been balancing preservation with sustainable redevelopment. The Fort Monroe Authority and its partners are increasingly focusing on adaptive reuse strategies that breathe new life into historic buildings while expanding residential and commercial activity.
For Hampton and the broader Peninsula, Fort Monroe remains one of the region’s most visible examples of how historic assets can be leveraged to support long-term economic vitality and community development.
