Communities with connected trail systems don't just attract walkers and cyclists, they attract visitors, new residents, and business investment. Studies consistently show that trails increase tourism spending, support local businesses, raise nearby property values, and make communities more attractive to employers recruiting talent. That's why extending the Virginia Capital Trail onto the Virginia Peninsula remains an important long-term opportunity for our region.

The Virginia Peninsula Chamber has long supported efforts to expand our regional trail network and is proud to routinely host the Board of Directors of the Tidewater Trails Alliance as they work to advance connected trail systems throughout Hampton Roads.

There was encouraging news recently as the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization (HRTPO) awarded more than $14.4 million for eight trail and sidewalk projects across Hampton Roads. Among the local projects receiving funding is $1.5 million for Trail757 at Endview in Newport News, helping expand the region's growing trail network.

Additional funding will support projects in Suffolk, James City County, Norfolk, and York County, improving connectivity, pedestrian safety, and access to recreation. These investments help close gaps in existing trail systems while creating safer routes for pedestrians and cyclists.

The Chamber will continue advocating for projects that strengthen regional connectivity, including the long-term extension of the Virginia Capital Trail across the Peninsula and its eventual connection with Trail757. Investments like these enhance quality of life, support tourism and economic development, and make the Virginia Peninsula an even more attractive place to live, work, and visit.
