Non-Profit Spotlight – The Newport News Green Foundation

The Newport News Green Foundation

Preserving a greener future.

Green spaces provide a wealth of benefits – they make cities more beautiful, create wildlife habitat, protect area waterways from pollution, and reduce air and noise pollution. Green space also strengthens the economy by helping to attract businesses and maintain property values, and by making the city safer, cleaner, and more enjoyable.

The Newport News Green Foundation is an independent nonprofit whose mission is to promote the creation and preservation of green space throughout the City of Newport News. We strive to enhance the quality of life for residents, increase property value, and support the growth of the city.

Property Highlight: The Sarfan Food Forest

We are currently working to transform a 5-acre plot of land on Chestnut Ave. into the peninsula’s first food forest! The Sarfan Food Forest is intended to address food scarcity in the southeast area as well as promote the environmental benefits of productive green space.

With design assistance from the Virginia Tech Community Design Assistance Center, our plan includes 75 different species of fruit-bearing trees and other plants native to Virginia, berry patches, gardens, a pollinator meadow, a farm stand, and educational and community gathering areas.

Upon completion, this property will be the 3rd largest food forest in the country and will provide fresh food and promote community connection year-round. Check out the recent Daily Press article for more information.

How You Can Help

You can support our efforts by becoming a member of the Newport News Green Foundation! Membership comes with perks like giveaways, invitations to members-only events, and more.

Local businesses looking for a creative way to use their marketing budget can adopt a property. Your funding will help cover the cost of maintenance of one of our properties (you get to pick which one!). In return, your firm’s logo will be featured on signage on the property. This is a great way to gain exposure for your business while showcasing your commitment to green space in our community!
